Local SEO for Tradies: How to Rank in Your Suburb, Not Just Your City

Houses on a bush-covered hillside in a New Zealand suburb

Short answer: to rank in your suburb, Google needs to be sure of three things. What you do, where you do it, and that locals trust you. You prove that with a complete Google Business Profile, a website with a page for each service and main area, steady genuine reviews, and the same business details everywhere you're listed. Here's how to do each one properly.

Why the suburb matters more than the city

People don't search "builder New Zealand". They search "builder Rolleston", "sparky Mt Albert" or "emergency plumber near me" from their kitchen. Google then leans heavily on distance and relevance. A tradie based in Rolleston will struggle to rank across the whole of Christchurch, but can own Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton. Pick the areas you actually want work in and go deep, rather than wide.

Step 1: Get your Google Business Profile right

This is what puts you in the map results, and for local trades it often brings more calls than the website itself. Set up as a service-area business, choose the most specific primary category, list your service suburbs and fill in every section. We've written a full Google Business Profile checklist.

Step 2: Give every main service its own page

One page per main service, such as "Heat pump installation", "Switchboard upgrades" or "Re-roofing". Each page should explain the job, what affects the cost, how long it takes, and show photos of ones you've done. Put the service and your main area in the page title and main heading, for example "Heat Pump Installation in Hamilton".

Step 3: Build suburb pages the right way

This is where most tradie SEO goes wrong. Copying one page 40 times and swapping the suburb name creates what Google calls doorway pages, and its spam policies can push the whole site down. A suburb page that ranks is one a local would actually find useful:

  • Local work you've done there, with photos. "Recent jobs in Ōrewa" is proof no competitor can copy.
  • Local detail: the kind of housing (villas, 70s brick-and-tile, new builds), local conditions (coastal corrosion, clay soils, hard water), and the jobs that come up most.
  • Reviews from customers in that area.
  • Neighbouring suburbs you also cover, linked to their own pages.
  • A clear call and quote button, same as every other page.

Suburb pages, written properly

Ted Pro builds a page for each suburb you name, written for your trade and that area, with your jobs and reviews built in.

Step 4: Get reviews that mention the job and the suburb

Ask every happy customer for a Google review, the same day the job's done. You can't tell them what to write, but a gentle prompt like "it'd be great if you mentioned what we did" often gets you "Great job replacing our hot water cylinder in Papatoetoe". That's relevance and prominence in one sentence. Reply to every review, and keep them genuine.

Step 5: Keep your business details identical everywhere

Your business name, phone number and address (often called NAP) should be word for word the same on your website, your Google profile and every directory. Then list yourself in a handful of trusted New Zealand places, for example:

  • Your trade association's "find a member" directory, if you're a member
  • NoCowboys and Builderscrack profiles, if you use them
  • Finda and Yellow
  • Your local business association or chamber of commerce

Quality beats quantity. A few consistent, relevant listings do more than hundreds of junk directories.

Step 6: Earn a few local links

Links from other local websites tell Google you're a real part of the community. Easy ones for tradies: a supplier's "trade partners" page, a local sports club you sponsor, a school or community project you helped with, or a builder you regularly sub for. One genuine local link is worth more than a pile of paid ones.

Step 7: Show Google the basics in the code

If you're managing the site yourself, make sure every page has a unique title and description, your site uses https, it's fast on a phone, and it includes LocalBusiness structured data (a bit of code that spells out your business name, trade, phone and service area for search engines). A good developer or platform does this for you.

What to expect

In smaller towns, a well set-up profile and a few good pages can get you to the top of the map within weeks. In busy parts of Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch it's a few months of steady work. The tradies who win are the ones who keep adding job photos and reviews every month, long after the site went live.

Frequently asked questions

What is local SEO for tradies?

Local SEO is making sure your business shows up when people nearby search for your trade, such as 'electrician Papamoa' or 'roofer near me'. For tradies it comes down to four things: your Google Business Profile, a website with pages for your services and areas, genuine reviews, and consistent business details across the web.

Should I make a separate page for every suburb?

Only for the suburbs you genuinely work in and want more jobs from, and only if each page is genuinely useful: local jobs you've done, the local housing and conditions, and relevant services. Dozens of near-identical pages with the suburb name swapped are treated as spam by Google and can hurt the whole site.

How long does local SEO take to work for a tradie?

A well set-up Google Business Profile can start bringing enquiries within weeks. Ranking your website pages in a suburb usually takes a few months, and faster in smaller towns with less competition than in central Auckland.

Can I do local SEO myself?

Yes. The basics are free: set up and fill in your Google Business Profile, ask every customer for a review, list your business consistently in a handful of NZ directories, and make sure your website has clear service and area pages. The hard part is keeping at it every month.

What does 'near me' mean for tradie SEO?

When someone searches 'plumber near me', Google uses their location to find nearby businesses. You can't target 'near me' by writing it on your site. You rank for it by being clearly relevant for your trade, having your service area set correctly, and having strong reviews.
